FROM THE JUNIORS TO THE SENIORS

Q&A: DAVID WRIGLEY – SEMI-RETIRED WICKETKEEPER-BATSMAN

BY IAN HODGSON

IH: So what got you into cricket and playing for Broad Oak CC?

DW: I live opposite the field and always have done, so I've been brought up there.

IH: When was your first game?

DW: It was when I was nine years old playing for the Under 13s. I got naught - what a glorious day that was!

IH: Are there any highlights of your career that stand out?

DW: I was gloriously run out for 99 against Skelmanthorpe - my best ever score! I was pushing for a hundred, trying to run a risky three on the last ball of the innings. My best bowling figures were 3-16 at Barkisland

IH: Any lows?

DW: My biggest low was being dropped from the Paddock Shield semi-final team in 1995. Another one would have to be when we had a batsman caught behind when he never touched it…but Richard Metcalfe called him back to our obvious disgust. He went on to make 88 - so that was a low point of my career!

IH: How have the teams that you've played for performed?  Have you been to any cup finals or won any league championships?

DW: No, I've never played in a cup final but I've won a couple of league championships with the juniors and a couple with the seniors. I've also been second team captain, which can be added to one of my highlights.

IH: Have you ever argued with an umpire over a decision?

DW: Weekly! I have been known to question decisions…

IH: Just to finish on, have you always been a wicketkeeper?

DW: Well I've always considered myself a bowler, even though I'm not! I can bat a bit and score a few runs from time to time. I come in at number seven, although I’m a bit higher up if I'm playing well but I prefer to come in at number seven.
